ancient teachings for modern life

I offer year round Hatha Yoga classes for all ages and all abilities here in the beautiful Isle of Purbeck - if you have a body and can breathe, you can do Yoga!

What I offer

  • All Ability Hatha Yoga

My all abilities classes are suitable for beginners and experienced Yogis. After warming and limbering the body, we work through a range of poses and Yoga sequences.

I always offer options and modifications in the pose so that everyone is able to work comfortably and safely, whilst deepening their practice.

These sessions include Pranayama - breath work and elements of mindfulness practice.

This class will provide you with a thorough stretch and should help you to let go of body tightness and mental flux.

The class is 90 minutes which includes a 15 minute guided relaxation to finish.

  • Gentle Hatha & Mindful Movement

My Gentle Hatha with Mindful Movement classes are designed to be super gentle but effective.

These classes are suitable for people who are managing an older body - dealing with the general aches and pains we get as we age but also specific health issues such as arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease - and the strengthening and management of replacement hips and knees.

I have helped people during chemo and radio therapy treatment and post surgery.

My aim is to help each participant to take an active role in their health and well being - working with the body they have right now - with all of its quirks and difficulties.

This Tuesday morning class is inclusive and extremely supportive.

It is 75 minutes long which includes a guided 15 minute relaxation to finish.

  • Intermediate Hatha

My Intermediate sessions are suitable for people who have been practising Yoga for at least 3 years.

It is important that you are fully aware of your body’s strengths and weaknesses and that you are able to self-modify and/or use appropriate yoga props to support your practice.

My teaching style in these sessions is matched to the ability in the room - there’s less explanation and the practice is more flowing.

Intermediate doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re doing difficult Yoga - but that the Yoga we do is fully integrated and is indeed a union of the Mind Body and Breath.

A 90 minute class which includes a 15 minute guided relaxation or Yoga Nidra to finish

  • Mindfulness Meditation

Sunday Morning Breathing Space meets at Harmans Cross on alternate Sundays throughout the year.

A well established group with a supportive atmosphere, we love to welcome new people.

I am a fully qualified and accredited teacher of Mindfulness Meditation and I incorporate elements of MBSR - Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - into these sessions.

The two hour session includes group discussion, readings, meditations and a tea break (with cake).

These sessions are suitable for experienced meditators and beginners - as full guiding is given.

Is Hatha Yoga right for you?

We’re lucky to have so many styles of yoga and great teachers on offer here in Purbeck.

There’s something for everyone.

From Ashtanga to Iyengar, Kundalini to Bikram - there’s a great variation in pace and style, not forgetting the individuality of the teacher and their personal approach and training.

I teach Hatha Yoga and was trained in the 1990s by Velta Wilson at the British Wheel.

Here’s a brief description of my approach.

Firstly, the pace of the class is slow. In every way, slow yoga is the safest way in which to practice. We spend our lives very much on autopilot and when doing body work, it’s not advisable to be on autopilot! You need to be fully aware of every move you’re making. It’s really important to be able to notice how your body is responding to a Yoga pose or movement - so that you can decide whether you need to stop doing it, modify it so it feels better - or deepen it if you feel able. Slow equals safe.

Slow might feel frustrating if you like to get things done but my advice would be to give it a try. You might discover that you are generally in a rush ………..

As our breathing slows - our minds have an opportunity to slow too. In this way, a Hatha Yoga class stimulates the parasympathetic response whilst dampening our stress response. We can find ourselves in a mild state of Fight Flight Freeze just negotiating every day life! In a Hatha Yoga session there is an intentional shift to a different rhythm. The parasympathetic response is sometimes referred to as Rest & Repair or Rest & Digest.

Of course, fast paced activities have their physical benefits - but we do need balance. And it’s good to remember that slow also equals healthy for the body and the mind.

You can expect a thorough stretch of your muscles and a thorough mobilisation of your joints. Yoga will also strengthen muscles and bones and encourages effective breathing; increasing oxygen whilst reducing blood pressure. The poses can massage, stimulate and detoxify organs - especially those of the digestive system. Hatha will help you to maintain the mobility you already have and help you to manage injury or illness.

And instead of worrying about flexibility, the focus is on discarding our tightness and tension - so please don’t have a moment’s worry about flexibility.

I give full guidance and as I get to know you, I can assist to make the Yoga really work for your body.

There are no complicated routines to learn - but we often string a few poses together ….. very slowly.

Relaxation is an important ingredient - and is a formal practice of Hatha Yoga. The idea that we can simply “just relax” or “just let go”, can be very off putting if your mind and body are full of stress and tension. Relaxation can be learned, just like the Yoga poses - and I give full guidance.

Finally - the atmosphere is kind and most definitely uncompetitive.

The best way to choose is to attend at least three classes of any style of yoga before deciding what would suit you best.

 Mindfulness

Do you sometimes feel that you are living life on fast-forward, unable to take your foot off the accelerator? Are you wired and tired? Wound up and stressed? Or perhaps you feel unmotivated, hopeless or subdued? Stuck in a rut.

Perhaps you are the kind of person who projects into the future - or maybe like me, you think a great deal about the past!

Neither of these options is comfortable - both could be said to be an auto-pilot situation, which dulls our awareness of what’s actually happening right now; and both can contribute to a lack of awareness of what’s beautiful in our lives.

Mindfulness meditation can make a truly revolutionary contribution to our mental and physical health.

Practised regularly, it will help you to slow down and awaken your awareness to the intricate tapestry that is the present moment.

It will not guarantee a stress free, difficulty free life - but it will help you to see more clearly how to respond to life and how some of the behaviour patterns and thought cycles we get into can become hard-wired habits that do harm; not just to ourselves but to others, too.

It can help us to be in better control of stress and anxiety, fear and anger - and promote the feeling of becoming more grounded, calmer, more compassionate human beings.

Life is a work in progress - meditation is a practice that helps us to further our understanding of what it’s all about!
